Rohi Visits Otewa School

We are in Room 2. We are Year 1 , 2 and 3. We have been learning about New Zealand and what makes us New Zealanders. We went to visit the Otorohanga Kiwi House and we saw the keas. The keas were very clever doing tricks. They could open the cage door with their beaks. When the kea was given a full yogurt in a pot, he could open it with his beak . He wrapped his claws around the pot to stop the yogurt pot rolling away. The yogurt was a fruity yogurt and the kea ate half of it.

Rohi Meets the Mice

Keanu brought his mice in to show the class. There are four of them and they are all female. They have a cage with a wheel in that they can run around in. There's food and water in the bottom and a sleeping place filled with straw at the top. Rohi was very curious about the mice. Do kea eat mice?

Tonight Rohi is getting into another bubble wrap envelope and is being posted south to another school. Watch here to see her new adventures.

Rohi's New Friends

Rohi came to our school assembly on Friday. She sat quietly and listened to other students presenting their work. We're not sure if she joined in the singing though.

Rohi has made lots of new friends in Room 11. She knows all 24 students and the teacher. Here are some of the other friends she has made.
Can you see Buddy the one-eyed bear from Hamilton, Mickey Mouse from Paris, Blinky the St Bernard from Switzerland and Kooky the Kookaburra from Australia?

Rohi Goes for a Ride

This morning Mr Hazlitt brought his own ride on mower from home. Rohi went for a ride with him when he was mowing. She is well camouflaged. Can you spot her? Then something even more exciting happened. Glenview School had a visit from a Stock car. Rohi managed to sneak into the car and perch herself on the driver's seat. Here she is. Can you see her through the wire windscreen?
Do you think a kea could wreck the windscreen on this car?

Facts About Rohi

Rohi's birthday is on the 27th of September; she is 2 years old.  Like most kea she likes to eat berries, rubbish, carrion (which means dead animals e.g. road kill), roots, nectar and sometimes sheep. Mrs McGhie won't let Rohi eat sheep though because she thinks it's very mean and quite a naughty thing to do.  You mostly find kea in the mountains of the South Island.  They like to play with people's cars during the ski season.  They jump on the roof of the car, they pull on the aerial, scratch at the windows and pull on the wipers.
Rohi was adopted by Mrs McGhie so she doesn't know much about her real family because she was just a baby when Mrs McGhie first got her.  She loves listening to stories because she has a very clever brain.  She likes to travel because then she can see new places and meet lots of new people.
Rohi doesn't have any kea friends but her best friend is Pythagoras the Bear who lives in our classroom and visits a different house each night. He only travels to our houses while Rohi gets to have the big adventures.  She is also friends with all of us.

Introducing Rohi

Rohi is a Kea.  She likes to travel and visit other schools.  When you squeeze her tummy she makes the Kea sound.  Rohi is 2 years old.  Keas are one of the most intelligent birds in the world.  Rohi is very clever and likes to learn new things.  Keas are mountain parrots and they are native to New Zealand.  Rohi has a medium sized beak and green feathers.  Underneath her wings it is orange.  When Rohi comes to visit your class she will bring a book that explains how Keas got the orange under their wings.
What else would you like to know about Rohi? Feel free to ask us any questions.
